Dunnottar Castle

Overlooking the North Sea, Dunnottar Castle perches on upon a stunning precipice - it's easy to see why this impressive medieval fortress, located south of Stonehaven, was chosen by director Franco Zeffirelli for his film of Hamlet starring Mel Gibson. Whilst the surviving structures are from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the site itself is believed to date from the Early Middle Ages.
