Frequently asked questions about the Family & Friends Railcard

The Family & Friends Railcard offers a discount for adults travelling with at least one child, making UK train travel cheaper for groups. This includes 60% off child fares and ⅓ off Standard Anytime , Off-Peak , Super Off-Peak and Advance tickets.

The Family & Friends Railcard offers discounts to you and up to a total of four adults and four children on UK trains. After buying your Family & Friends Railcard, the Journey Planner can be used to check which train routes your new discount can be applied on.

A Family & Friends Railcard will give up to four adults and four children, aged 5-15 train travel. Two adults can be named as cardholders on the Family & Friends Railcard but they don't need to travel together; however there must be at least one child who does not need to be named, between the ages of 5 and 15 present to be eligible for the discount.

What’s more, you don’t need to be related, so it works in tandem for a fun day out with friends to one of our destinations . Remember four adults and four children can travel on the same card and enjoy the savings.

If any of the children in your group turns 16 before the 1-year Family & Friends Railcard runs out, they can still travel at the discounted fare for the length of time the card is valid. If you’ve got a 3-year Railcard, they can continue to travel at the discounted child rate until the day before they turn 17.

A Family & Friends Railcard discount can be used for travel across the National Rail network, including the entire ScotRail network, at any time of the day. This excludes journeys between two stations within the London and South East area during morning Peak hours on Mondays to Fridays.

A Family & Friends Railcard can offer a discount for up to four adults, and two adults can be named as cardholders. You don't need to travel together but do need to be travelling with at least one child between the ages of 5 and 15 to be eligible for the discount.

You must have at least one child aged between 5 and 15 travelling with you to be eligible for the discount.

The Family & Friends Railcard gives you 60% off for up to four kids aged between 5 and 15.

Under 5s go completely free but if there’s only one child travelling in the group, who is under 5, you’ll need to buy them a child ticket for the adults to be eligible for the Family & Friends discount. All child tickets are subject to a £1 minimum fare.
