Health and wellbeing

It’s not just the railway that we invest in. We’re committed to investing in our people and offering a fantastic array of benefits.

We know that in order to do a great job at work, people need to feel respected, appreciated and looked after. We’re proud to be a Living Wage employer ensuring that everyone receives a wage that makes a difference to their life. We also offer a fantastic array of benefits including free rail travel for all employees, their partner and children, excellent pension, an employee assistance programme and generous annual leave.

Mental Health

Now, more than ever, it’s important to look out for each other.

In 2019 we were awarded the See Me at Work Partnership. We saw it as a brilliant opportunity to emphasise the fact that we want to end the stigma around mental health. We recognised levels of poor mental health through our absence figures, and this was something that we wanted to try and improve for our colleagues.

By working with See Me, we hope to make a difference to our colleagues’ mental health and stop the sigma.

Mental Health First Aiders

Over 70 members of ScotRail staff are qualified Mental Health First Aiders, having received NHS-accredited training on how to identify and support colleagues and passengers that may require assistance. They are able to talk to anyone in need and guide them towards the relevant service for help. Over the past year they have assisted more than 30 people.

Did you know that for every life lost on the railway, six are saved by interventions made by people around them? We work closely with the Samaritans to ensure that people know there is someone they can always talk to. On a daily basis, railway staff and members of the public approach a distressed individual to help get them to a place of safety.
